Week 73, Great Bend - Thanksgiving and Getting in the Christmas Spirit

Image
Wow, a lot has happened since last I messaged. Let's see. First, we started and finished a music video! I'm singing Silent Night and it's going to be posted on Facebook in the coming weeks so watch out for that. We were able to get a member, Brother Hills, to help with recording with his equipment so we were super thankful for that.  Next, transfers happened. We all got transferred out of Colby so we were super sad about that. I love those elders, and the members we were able to meet, so much. I am now in Great Bend, Kansas. It's basically smack dab in the middle of the State. My new companion is Elder Miller. We had Thanksgiving as a new district here in Great Bend. We got to know each other a bit and played some games together. The food was good and lots of members gave us food. We did have cranberry sauce for the Turkey which I was very happy about :) Also, we did some service digging up sweet potatoes for a lady who lives in a house that used to be a bank in the 191...

Week 69, Colby - Halloween Night at the Museum

Image
We had to dress up for one of the museum's Halloween events so I was a detective  (because it was the easiest) Hello. Four Score and Seven Weeks ago since my last email... oops, but I'm doing it now.  As you all know, not as much happens as it used to because of the coronavirus but I do have some cool things to report. The first is that we were able to help our local museum with a halloween event they were doing. We helped them get ready and execute the event and it was super fun to be able to hand out treats to kids and help out our great community members here. We also dressed up and I'll attach pictures. We also helped the museum out with indexing for county births and marriages all the way back to the 1800s. It's crazy. Another cool thing that happened is that we went knocking on people's doors for the first time since March! It was honestly not very successful and left something to be desired. We could only contact those who had talked to missionaries before bu...

Week 63, Colby - Zone Conference!

Image
Me at a Mexican market Hello everyone! This week we got to teach some new people the gospel so we will see how that goes. The highlight of my week was zone conference!  We had so many good messages shared at zone conference but the one which struck me the most was something like this "We don't know why God required Joseph Smith to seal his testimony with his blood, but God required it and Joseph gave it." Similarly, prophets across time were required to sacrifice immensely for God including Jesus Christ our Savior.  I encourage everyone to remember that. When you feel like you're going through hard things, or that the Lord is requiring much of you, remember that others have done more and that you will be blessed more than you can imagine for your sacrifices. God requires perfection eventually. We cannot reach our potential without the refining and painful fires of adversity and sacrifice. God loves us enough to prove us and help us make ourselves better. In addition t...

Week 62, Colby - New Record!

Image
Okay so two highlights for the week. 1. The bird got better and flew away after we took it to the vet. The vet discovered it was just a sprained wing but apparently it just needed a couple nights of warmth and rest and he got better!  2. We taught 17 lessons last week! We are also engaging the members more and our video that we made in Colby for Facebook got the most views in our Zone!  We're doing great in Colby and had a fun P-day again with games and sports. It's nice to be active once in a while. Anyways have a great week everyone and remember that the Lord is on your side. Adios! Part of our district just hanging out (on P-day) Pic of me at a Park we discovered in Colby. It was fun.  We wish we discovered this park before but it never came up on google maps. My companion ran through a kids waterpark on a dare and got soaked A Caterpillar decided it would be fun to climb on me while I was playing uno.  I put him back into nature.

Week 61, Colby - A Bird

Image
Elder Alex Walbom and "Sky" Hello everyone! So this week was productive and fun. We met our lesson goal again and were able to get some good service opportunities set up.    The craziest thing that happened this week was that we rescued a bird! So I found a bird on the ground and I thought that was weird so I approached it and it tried to run away from me and I could see that its wing was broken. I ran after it (it was going through fences and brambles and giving me a run for my money) and finally scooped it as it was hiding from me. I didn’t want to leave it out because it was getting windy and very cold and predators would probably kill it so I brought it inside.   We took care of it. We made a little area of our home its home and we laid paper towels and newspaper down for it. We gave it water and food. It was a struggle and it pooped a lot- luckily not on our carpet. We even bathed it to clean its wounds on its wing.   We think that the high winds from an incomin...

Week 60, Colby - Surpassing Goals

Image
So this last week we were finally able to reach our teaching goals and we actually passed it. Our goal was 12 lessons and we got 14! So that was exciting. Quite a few of those were done in Spanish so we were able to practice our Spanish as well.    I also gave a talk in church on Covenants and Marriage. That was a little bit of a dozy seeing as I'm not married, but I think it went well and the spirit was able to testify of my words. I actually had so much prepared that I wasn't able to talk about all of it. I guess it's better to have too much to say than not enough in those situations.   Well other than that we stayed in our apartment and taught people like we usually do with the occasional excursion to the church family history center.   Have an awesome week! Adios! -Elder Walbom
