Week 19, Primero de Julio -We had a baptism! (but not ours)
Elder Alex Walbom’s weekly email:
So this week was pretty laid back. I'm enjoying
the change of scenery (see the pics below) and my new companion. We are having
a pretty tough time finding people to teach. The people here, and some of
them are wonderful, are stubborn and uninterested in two random guys
wearing white shirts trying to share a message. Understandable. But the people
we do find to teach are great. We have a couple people who we think could get
baptized in December so that's very uplifting.
One of our people is
Oscar Cardenas. We started talking to him this week and he started talking
about how he believes that prophets should still exist just like in ancient
times because God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We saw that bone
and we took it. We taught a little about the Restoration of the Gospel, how
prophets guide us still in these days and how God loves all his children and
showed us that through Jesus Christ.
Another person is
Mirta Solis. She has been interested for many years but now we have hermanas in
the area that can help us with them and she came to church the past few weeks.
The faith of some of these people to just come and see and be in the church
even when they are not sure if it's true is just amazing. I can testify of the
peace that comes from faithful Sabbath Day observance.
The Final person that
I will talk about is Aura Palencia. She also has great faith. She is old, can't
walk far and doesn't understand much but she still comes to church because she
feels that it is good. We tried to teach her the Plan of Salvation but she was
in and out of sleep for most of the lesson. We will probably go over that with
her again but that's okay.
So this week we had a
baptism but it was a baptism of the ward and not for the mission bc the kid was
8 years old. His stepdad is getting baptized at the end of November but his mom
is a member so they just had my companion baptize him. He is really awesome and
his whole family loves the Elders. Anyways that was the first baptism I have
been able to go to and it wasn't even for the mission haha.
I'm eating a lot of
beans and eggs...
Oh! One thing about
Guatemala is that they go all out for primary programs. Decorations everywhere,
processions of children going up to the stand, places for pictures after the
program, it was a bit insane. But also kind of cool.
Also our service of
cleaning fish tanks was cancelled.
Adios!

We can see another mission from this hill since we are on the edge of the mission in Primero De Julio.
Only the richest people have small lawns like this.
