Week 20, Primero de Julio - How Great Thou Art


 Here is the weekly email from Elder Walbom:

Hey everyone. This won't be too long. This week was a good week. We found lots of people to teach. I sang. We taught more of our progressing people. Overall it was productive.
Highlights of this week. 

We met this crazy pair, Francisco and Aracel. He works in music and she owns a salon. They already had a book of mormon and were reading it to learn more and that was pretty cool but when we actually started trying to teach them it was crazy. They kept asking questions about black and white magic. They were asking about idol worship and commenting on the mysteries of God. We tried to teach a simple introductory lesson but honestly they dragged us down a rabbit hole and we just had to stop the lesson. At least we got in the closing prayer. We're going to try teaching them again better this week.

We finally got to teach our bus contact from a few weeks ago. She wanted to come to church this past Sunday but she had an emergency with her family. Anyways we had a powerful lesson with her and the spirit was really testifying to her heart, I could tell. We taught her primarily about the Book of Mormon and a little bit about the Great Apostasy. She is super excited and wants to read the book and is coming to church on Sunday. This was the experience that inspired the title. Only God could have prepared a soul to hear the gospel like her. She is so ready for these eternal truths. As missionaries, it is humbling to realize that even after all we do, even after expending all of our mental and physical engery, at times nobody listens, and yet God- with no effort on our part save being in the right place- can bring the perfect soul to you. How humbling to realize that really we have no control and God has all control.

The final highlight is the mission kickoff of Light the World and me singing in this multizone conference. I sang the song Gethsemane in spanish and it was awesome. I love singing. The whole mission then kicked off the church initiative Light the World for this area. We created plans on how we were going to work with the members by using Family Home Evenings to find those who need to hear the gospel. It was busy.

Anyways. I am working down here in the land of the Quetzal and my spanish esta mejorando cada dia!

I just discovered the lovely surprise of having absolutely no photos. [Luckily Mom took some screenshots!] No one knows what happened but my camera is completely empty. Everything is gone. Happy Thanksgiving!

Week 8, Pueblo Nuevo Viñas

I’m going to start off this week’s blog with a funny little story.   Elder Walbom mentioned how they are teaching English every week to those who are interested in Pueblo Nuevo Viñas.   This past week they had a spelling bee, and he said that they were really bad at spelling English words.   But then he said they all got a huge laugh when he told them how he was down to the final 3 students in his spelling bee in 6 th grade, but lost on the word “fajita.” They thought that was pretty funny! The first pic above is Elder Walbom drinking out of a bag.  The water they have to drink (because missionaries from the U.S. aren't allowed to drink the water there) comes in bags, and they don't have water bottles yet, so they just rip off a corner and drink out of the bag.  T hey went fishing last week during their P-day and Elder Walbom  caught the first fish!   They were using string tied to a bamboo pole!   He did say it was a bit diffi...

Week 22, Primero de Julio - Quema Del Diablo!!

 " The family where the kid got baptized a month ago and the  dad got baptized two weeks ago more or less.  They are super Pilas!" Here is Elder Walbom’s weekly email: Well folks, This week was the burning of the devil. We were just going about our daily business, we knew that this day was a holiday but we didn-t know what would happen. Well exactly at 6 pm on the dot the explosions started. And most of it was not fireworks, it was literal firecrackers that made car alarms go off, hurt my ears, made me jump and punched my chest. Honestly I didn-t feel safe walking the streets at that time. Then the fire. The devils went up in flames and every corner had a big fire where the devil burned. Its supposed to be a catholic tradition round these parts. It was super interesting. On another note, the people here really like fireworks, more than any other group of people I have met. Week 73, Great Bend - Thanksgiving and Getting in the Christmas Spirit

Wow, a lot has happened since last I messaged. Let's see. First, we started and finished a music video! I'm singing Silent Night and it's going to be posted on Facebook in the coming weeks so watch out for that. We were able to get a member, Brother Hills, to help with recording with his equipment so we were super thankful for that.  Next, transfers happened. We all got transferred out of Colby so we were super sad about that. I love those elders, and the members we were able to meet, so much. I am now in Great Bend, Kansas. It's basically smack dab in the middle of the State. My new companion is Elder Miller. We had Thanksgiving as a new district here in Great Bend. We got to know each other a bit and played some games together. The food was good and lots of members gave us food. We did have cranberry sauce for the Turkey which I was very happy about :) Also, we did some service digging up sweet potatoes for a lady who lives in a house that used to be a bank in the 191...
